To talk about Lanzarote is to talk about experiences, to think about action, to practise sport.
In a place with a warm climate, crystal clear waters and spectacular views, the outdoors is just waiting to be explored.
Exercise is the perfect excuse to experience the charms of the Canaries’ number one sports destination.
Lanzarote is the ideal destination to practise sport if you want to do different and thrilling activities without having to leave Europe:
Triathlon, surfing, diving, sailing, cycling, running, trail-running, kitesurfing and a long list of other sports are the reasons why Lanzarote is known as the Hawaii of Europe.
Are you keen on keeping up your fitness while you’re on holiday? Choose the Island of Volcanoes and make the most of the opportunity of being in a sports destination such as Lanzarote while you enjoy a restful time surrounded by majestic landscapes and tranquil coasts.
Practise surfing on Playa de Famara
Whether you’re an experienced surfer or a tourist looking to have an experience of a lifetime, Famara has what you need.
Considered Lanzarote’s best beach with a sand sea bed, it has waves for all levels. Venture down to the south of the island to discover it.
If you prefer to watch others surf, every year, in October, the beautiful beach of San Juan holds the 6-star ASP Pro Championship “La Santa”, just a few metres from there.
The winner of this competition is the European champion. The competition allocates valuable qualifying points and grants prizes of more than 150,000 dollars.
Let the wind blow away your tension
In Lanzarote you can practise wind sports all year. Because of the mild and pleasant temperatures, the trade winds that prevail all across the island and the magnificent spots all along the coast, it is the ideal place to sail the waters with your board.
Did you know that the European Windsurfing Championship is held there every year? Some of the world’s top athletes in this water sport come to the freestyle event. For the last edition, more than 15 nationalities took part in the event on playa de las Cucharas.
Those visitors who want to have fun practising this brilliant and complex exercise can go to any of the schools dotted along the coast. They will help you with material and information.
The best conditions can be found in the areas of Costa Teguise, La Santa, Jameos and Famara. What is holding you back from trying out this sport in Lanzarote?
Cycle through undiscovered and unusual spots
Cycling is one of the sports that can be practised in Lanzarote year-round. The island has 8 routes covering 385 km where keen cyclists can practise their favourite activity while also enjoying the views and landscapes the island has to offer.
If you are looking for a quiet ride where you can observe nature, choose a road route. Cycling along less travelled paths among lunar landscapes and endless beaches bathed by the Atlantic is an experience you can’t miss out on.
There are options for all levels: from the easy 14.3 km route to Tinajo to the complex 180 km Ironman that climbs 2550 metres.
But if you want to connect to nature and you’re not bothered by taking on a challenge, the Haría route passes through spots such as Máguez, Guinate, La Corona volcano, Tabayesco, the Mala dam and the Rincón de la Paja. The majority of the route is track making it one of the more difficult options. Exercise caution at all times
Find running routes in Lanzarote
If you are looking for places to run in Lanzarote, there is a range of options depending on your experience. For a more relaxed route, visit Playa Blanca. Its promenade is perfect for looking out to sea while you visit one of Lanzarote’s most popular spots.
The path will take you to a track that is part of the Natural Monument of Los Ajaches. Watch out for the descents and ascents! When you reachPlaya de Papagayo you will have finished.
For those who like competing, we have the Wine Run, an original race with two routes of 22.3 km and 11.5km which will take you through the La Gueria vineyards. Gastronomy and sport, what a superb combination!
Try the triathlon if you want a real challenge
This type of competition requires a certain level of preparation. Short or long, to take part in a triathlon you need to train in swimming, cycling and running.
If you want to do your first triathlon, we recommend the Ocean Lava Supersprintthat usually takes place in October. The challenge consists of 500 metres swimming, 10 km cycling and 2.5 km running.
For the more adventurous ones with training, we have the Lanzarote Ironman, the oldest of the IM-Wanda franchise in Europe. This year is the 29th edition!
Train well, because it consists of 1.9 km swimming, 90 km cycling and 21.1 km running. If you visit the island during the month of May you can witness one of Lanzarote’s most difficult and well-known sports challenges or…participate in the IMLanzarote 2020.
Discover the colours of a spectacular sea floor
Although widely known for its different and remarkable landscapes, the underwater element of the island is a huge attraction that the majority of visitors are unaware of.
Costa Teguiseis the ideal option for starting to discover the waters surrounding the island of Lanzarote and to observe a sample of the archipelago’s great variety of marine life.
If you like diving or snorkelling, make sure you don’t miss out on a visit to the Underwater Atlantic Museum.
It is the first underwater museum in Europe and its main aim is to create a new artificial habitat for species from the region and to raise awareness about the damages being caused to our seas.
The Underwater Atlantic Museum comprises more than 300 statues by the sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor. To see them, you can descend 12 m and swim around the 2,500 square meters, admiring this incredible work of art.
