What’s under the sea in Lanzarote

Over the years the waters surrounding the island of Lanzarote have received multiple descriptions.

Some reveal the mysticism of the Atlantic, talking about the strength of its intense blue. Others describe the purity of its white sandy coasts and tranquil tides.

A mixture of metaphors and contrasts that mean we still wonder what lies in the depths of its waters.

A visit to the Underwater Atlantic Museum

At a depth of 12 metres in the Bahía de Las Coloradas, in the south of the island, lies what is known around the world as the Atlantic Museum.

Submerged in the Atlantic Ocean there are three hundred human statues, creations that bring life to the sea of Lanzarote, and comprise the third underwater museum designed by the British artist Jason deCaires Taylor.

The author’s aim with this work was simply to represent the union that has always existed between the Canaries and the sea. To do so, the moulds for each of the statues under the sea of Lanzarote were created using the moulds of residents from the nearby area.

But that is not all. The sculptures under the sea of Lanzarote were also created to contribute to the development of coral reefs that will end up fusing the creations with nature. Hence the union between the sea and the island-dwellers.

To observe and “soak up” the beauty of this aquatic creation, you simply have to go to Playa Blanca. To gain access you must dive down to the Underwater Atlantic Museum.

Dive in the waters of the Atlantic Ocean

Where can you dive in Lanzarote? The island of the volcanoes has several immersion zones where you can enjoy this water sport.

Depending on the difficulty level, there is a variety of options to choose from but it is always best to ask for advice from the diving centres in Lanzarote.

Costa Teguise, for example, is ideal for taking your first steps in diving. This artificial bay contains safe and tranquil waters, as well as a varied sample of marine life from the Canarian archipelago. Cow bream, white sea bream, Canary damsel and crabs are just some of the species you can encounter on this side of the coast.

If you want to go up a level, you can do some of the routes of La Mala, a place that is suitable for different levels and where we can find beautiful submarine landscapes of volcanic lava, caves and white seabeds.

Remember, the best spot to dive in Lanzarote is the one that best suits your level.

Experience the Lanzarote freediving championships

Once again, Lanzarote was chosen as the location to hold the 3rd Spanish Outdoor Apnea Championship. It is an intriguing competition full of extreme experiences, which attracts expert and internationally renowned competitors to the island.

The national freediving record at a constant weight with fins was beaten. Alfredo Roën managed to descend to 85 metres in Puerto del Carmen.

Lanzarote is considered to be a perfect destination for apnea testing. With good temperatures all year, mild currents and deep areas near the coast, Lanzarote is the place to practise freediving in the Canaries.

Experiment with nature in the Geopark and the Chinijo Archipelago

The island of Lanzarote has an internationally renowned geological heritage. There we can observe how nature has evolved over 15 million years through the volcanic, erosive and sedimentary processes that have taken place. Its thirteen protected spaces mean government permission is required to enjoy diving.

The Chinijo Archipelago is the largest marine reserve in the European Union, extending over 700 square kilometres of unique fauna. To reach these small islands, you will have to come via La Graciosa by ferry. But the chance to discover an unspoiled island is worth the journey.

La Punta delPobre, in Caleta del Sebo, is a perfect place to dive and see more than 300 marine species.
